Apostille Birth Certificate

What does getting married in another country and obtaining dual citizenship have in common?

They both require that you apostille your birth certificate.

An apostille is the certification of authenticity that is recognized among countries that are members of the Hague Convention of 1961. The apostille confirms the seals and signatures of documents (such as birth certificates) are true copies of the original.

If your destination country is not a member of the Hague Convention of 1961, then your birth certificate will need to follow the legalization process through the Embassy or Consulate.

Apostille Your Birth Certificate

The country you are traveling to will not accept your birth certificate without it first being apostilled or legalized.

The first step is to locate the original birth certificate or obtain a certified copy.

Obtaining a copy of your birth certificate can be a bit time-consuming. You will need to contact the State Registrar or the County Clerk where the birth took place. Make sure to request a ‘certified’ copy; this means that the county or state has endorsed that it is a valid copy.

Another option is to visit one of the various online companies that can obtain a certified copy of the birth certificate. Companies such as VitalChek and Vital Records will contact the correct county and state for you. You fill out their online forms, and the certificate is mailed directly to you.

The second step is to obtain the apostille for your birth certificate. Luckily, we can quickly do that for you.

    Hello,

I’m a US citizen, born in Pennsylvania but residing in North Carolina, and am planning to get married abroad. I have my original birth certificate. Due to the current situation with coronavirus and many things being shut down, is it still possible to get an apostille? And if so, do you know approximately how long the process would take?

    Thank you for your help.

I am in the beginning stages of applying for Italian dual citizenship. Before I request documents, what exactly am I asking for? I will need birth and marriage records for grandparents and parents,,as well as for me and my husband. I understand all documents need an Apostille, but I’m unclear on that process. Do I send the certified true copies of all documents to Secretary of State, or died the original issuing agency do that? Can I do that in my state of current residence or does it go to the state in which documents were issued. Does my signature on my requests need to be notarized?

Before I start spending money, I’d like to know what to ask for.

    Thank you!
    Francine
