Apostille Documents for Mainland China

In March 2023, China joined the Hague Convention of 1961. This convention ratified the use of an apostille as a form of authentication for documents to be used across countries. Before this convention, all documents needing authentication were required to receive embassy legalization.

As of November 7, 2023, the apostille process has officially started for US documents that will be used in Mainland China.

The autonomous regions of Hong Kong and Macau are already members of the Hague Convention of 1961 and still follow the apostille process.

What is an Apostille?

An apostille is attached to the document and verifies the seals and signatures of the document. It does not verify the document’s contests, only that it is authentic. This verification can occur at the state or federal level, depending on the document.

State-issued documents

Documents issued by the state can include:

  • Driver’s license
  • Birth certificate
  • Marriage license
  • Death certificate
  • High school diploma
  • University degree

The county must verify these documents before receiving the apostille from the Secretary of State.

Federally-issued documents

Documents issued by the federal government can include:

  • Passport
  • FBI background check
  • Social Security letter
  • Federal taxes

These documents must be sent to the US Department of State in Washington, DC, to receive the apostille.

Apostille Documents for Mainland China

China is strict with the rules of documents that are submitted for use. For example, when applying for an apostille for China:

  • Be sure to make a note that your document is being used for China
  • DO NOT remove the staples – it will invalidate the document

Because China has strict requirements, we suggest you work with an experienced company that can apostille documents for mainland China for you. Forgetting a simple instruction, such as removing staples, can cause the apostille process to be delayed or rejected.
