Certain life events — working overseas, getting married abroad, applying for foreign residency, or enrolling in an international university — require your U.S. documents to be officially recognized in another country. Countries that are members of the 1961 Hague Apostille Convention accept an apostille as that recognition. Indiana authentication for non-Hague countries follows a different process and may require additional legalization steps.
In Indiana, apostilles are issued by the Secretary of State for eligible documents issued in the state, certified by an Indiana public official, or properly notarized by a commissioned Indiana notary public.
