How to get an Apostille in Louisiana

When a Louisiana document will be presented abroad, it may require official certification before it can be used by the receiving authority. The Louisiana Secretary of State issues apostilles and authentication certificates for eligible documents originating in Louisiana. These may include certified vital records, parish and court records, business documents, academic records prepared according to state requirements, and private documents properly notarized by a Louisiana notary.

The destination country determines the required process. A Louisiana apostille is generally required when the document will be used in a country that participates in the Hague Apostille Convention. For a non-Hague country, the document may require a certificate of authentication, followed by certification from the U.S. Department of State and legalization through the appropriate embassy or consulate.

Louisiana Apostille Requirements

The Louisiana Secretary of State certifies the signature and authority of the official who signed the document. Preparation therefore depends on the type of record:

  • Vital records. To obtain a Louisiana birth certificate apostille, submit a certified copy issued by the Louisiana Department of Health’s Vital Records Registry. Death certificates follow the same requirement, and plain photocopies of vital records are not accepted.
  • Court and parish records. Submit an original certified document issued by the appropriate Clerk of Court. These records do not require separate notarization.
  • Business documents. Corporate filings and other business records should be issued or certified by the Louisiana authority that maintains them.
  • Private documents. Powers of attorney, affidavits, consent forms, and similar records must be properly notarized by a Louisiana notary. The notary’s printed name and identification number must appear beneath the signature.

Plain photocopies generally cannot be apostilled unless they are properly notarized or issued as certified copies by the appropriate authority.

FBI Background Check Apostille Services in Louisiana

An FBI Identity History Summary, commonly known as an FBI background check, is a federal document. It falls outside the authority of the Louisiana Secretary of State and must be processed through the U.S. Department of State’s Office of Authentications.

A federal apostille for an FBI background check may be required for immigration, foreign residency, citizenship, international employment, visa applications, adoption, education, or professional licensing.

The destination country determines the required process:

  • Hague Convention countries require a federal apostille for the FBI background check.
  • Non-Hague countries require federal authentication and may also require embassy or consular legalization.
