Get an Apostille in Colorado for International Document Use

Colorado documents used in another country typically require official authentication before a foreign authority will accept them. The Colorado Secretary of State issues apostilles and authentication certificates for eligible records, including documents signed by a Colorado notary public, certified vital records, and documents certified by a county clerk’s office.

Countries that are members of the 1961 Hague Apostille Convention accept an apostille as sufficient proof of authenticity. For countries outside the Convention, Colorado Secretary of State authentication is the first step in a longer process that also requires U.S. Department of State certification and embassy or consular legalization.

Colorado Apostille Requirements

Before submission to the Colorado Secretary of State, documents must meet state authentication standards. Understanding Colorado apostille requirements ahead of time can help you avoid the most common causes of delay and rejection:

  • Vital records. Requesting a Colorado birth certificate apostille or Colorado marriage certificate apostille requires an official certified copy from the state vital records office or the appropriate county clerk. Photocopies are not accepted.
  • Notarized documents. Their submissions must include original signatures, a complete notary statement with no blank spaces, and a seal from a commissioned Colorado notary public. The notarization must be valid and current at the time of submission.
  • Academic documents. Getting a Colorado diploma apostille or Colorado transcript apostille generally requires notarization by an authorized school official. A school seal or signature alone is typically not sufficient for apostille processing.

FBI Background Check Apostille Services in Colorado

Colorado residents applying for immigration, employment, residency, adoption, study, or a visa abroad usually need an apostille on their FBI background check. An FBI Criminal History Report is a federal document; therefore, the Colorado Secretary of State has no authority to apostille it. A federal apostille request must be processed through the U.S. Department of State’s Office of Authentications in Washington, D.C.

One Source Process provides FBI apostille service for Colorado residents from start to finish:

  • confirming destination country requirements;
  • preparing documents correctly;
  • routing to the appropriate federal authority;
  • managing return delivery.

Why Choose One Source Process for Colorado Apostille Services

One Source Process has been handling apostille documents for international use since 2010, working with documents from every Colorado county and submitting to both state and federal authorities.

Before anything is submitted, we review each document carefully — checking for missing signatures, incomplete notarization, outdated certifications, and any formatting issues that would cause the Colorado Secretary of State to reject the request. This review is free and happens before you pay.

From there, we route each document to the correct authority. State-issued documents go to the Colorado Secretary of State. Federal documents go to the U.S. Department of State. For non-Hague countries, we coordinate embassy submissions when required.

For destinations that require it, we also provide certified translation in over 250 languages alongside the apostille, so there is no need to arrange a separate vendor. Once complete, your documents are returned safely via tracked FedEx or DHL, whether you are in the U.S. or abroad.
