Get an Apostille in Maryland for International Document Use

Documents issued or notarized in Maryland may need additional certification before they can be used abroad. The Maryland Secretary of State issues apostilles for qualifying documents going to Hague Convention countries and standard certifications for those intended for non-Hague destinations.

The office handles certified birth and death certificates, marriage and divorce records, police and criminal-history records, corporate certificates of good standing, and other state or county documents. Academic records prepared according to state requirements and properly notarized private papers may also qualify.

Maryland Apostille Requirements

Preparation requirements vary by document type. If you are learning how to get an apostille in Maryland, first identify whether your document follows the route for state- or county-issued records, private notarized papers, or academic documents.

State- or county-issued documents

Birth and death certificates, marriage records, divorce decrees, and criminal-history records must carry the seal and authorized signature of the issuing Maryland authority. The document must be an official certified copy bearing a signature the Secretary of State can verify.

Private notarized documents

Affidavits, powers of attorney, consent forms, and other private papers must include a complete notarial certificate from a Maryland notary. The document must then be certified by the Clerk of the Circuit Court in the county where the notary was commissioned. This certification is required before the Secretary of State can issue an apostille for documents notarized in Maryland.

Academic documents

Diplomas, transcripts, grades, and other school records follow the route for non-state documents. After the record is obtained from the school, it must be properly notarized and certified by the appropriate Circuit Court clerk before submission to the Secretary of State.

FBI Background Check Apostille Services in Maryland

An FBI Identity History Summary, commonly called an FBI background check, is a federal document processed by the U.S. Department of State. It goes there directly, without the Circuit Court certification that Maryland requires for notarized paperwork. Residents may need an FBI background check apostille for use abroad in the following cases:

  • immigration, residency, or citizenship;
  • international employment or a work or student visa;
  • adoption or a professional license.

For a Hague Convention country, the Department of State’s apostille completes the process. For a non-Hague destination, the report requires federal authentication and may then need embassy or consular legalization.

Why Choose One Source Process for Maryland Apostille Services

An uncertified copy, incomplete notarization, or missed Circuit Court certification can delay an otherwise straightforward request. At One Source Process, we review each document before submission, check its signatures, seals, and certified-copy status, and explain any corrections or additional preparation needed.

Our team also determines the correct route based on the document and destination country. This may involve a Maryland Secretary of State apostille, a federal apostille, or additional embassy or consular steps for Maryland document legalization. For notarized documents, we confirm whether certification from the appropriate Circuit Court clerk is required before the document goes to Annapolis.

We coordinate apostille services for personal, academic, legal, and business documents, along with certified translations when required. You receive updates throughout the process, and completed documents are returned by tracked domestic or international shipping.
