Get an Apostille in Mississippi for International Document Use

A Mississippi document headed abroad may need official Mississippi document authentication before a foreign authority will accept it. The Mississippi Secretary of State issues apostilles and Certificates of Authority for eligible records, confirming the signature and seal of the public official or notary rather than the document’s content.

The office authenticates certified vital records, properly prepared county and court records, business documents, academic records, and private papers notarized by a Mississippi notary public.

Which certificate you receive depends on the destination. A country that belongs to the Hague Apostille Convention requires an apostille. A non-Hague country requires a Certificate of Authority, which may be followed by federal, embassy, or consular authentication.

Mississippi Apostille Requirements

To apostille documents in Mississippi, first identify the document category and the form required for submission. The main requirements are:

  • Certified records. Birth, death, and marriage records must be official certified copies. These are available from the Mississippi State Department of Health, while marriage records may also be obtained from the circuit clerk in the county where the license was issued. For a Mississippi birth certificate apostille or Mississippi marriage certificate apostille, submit the record provided by the appropriate office rather than a plain photocopy.
  • Court records. These documents must carry the appropriate certification and signature of the clerk or other official who issued them. The Secretary of State must be able to verify that official’s signature.
  • Business documents. Certificates of good standing, articles of incorporation, and similar corporate records must be official documents or certified copies issued by the Business Services Division of the Mississippi Secretary of State’s office.
  • Academic records. Diplomas and transcripts generally require an authorized school official’s signature to be notarized by a Mississippi notary public. A Mississippi diploma apostille or Mississippi transcript apostille can then be requested using the properly notarized document.
  • Private documents. Powers of attorney, affidavits, and similar papers must be properly signed and notarized by a commissioned Mississippi notary public. Submit the original notarized document, not a plain photocopy.

FBI Background Check Apostille Services in Mississippi

An FBI background check apostille for Mississippi residents may be required for immigration, foreign residency or citizenship, international employment, a work or study visa, adoption, or professional licensing. The underlying document, officially called an FBI Identity History Summary, is a federal record.

For that reason, it does not go through the Mississippi Secretary of State. Instead, it must be submitted to the U.S. Department of State’s Office of Authentications. The destination country determines which certificate is issued:
