Get an Apostille in Georgia for International Document Use

Foreign governments don’t automatically accept U.S. documents at face value. Before a Georgia-issued record, notarized agreement, or certified copy can be used abroad, it typically needs an apostille. It’s an official certification issued by the Georgia Superior Court Clerks’ Cooperative Authority (GSCCCA) that verifies the document’s signatures and seals are legitimate.

An apostille in Georgia applies when the destination country is a member of the Hague Apostille Convention, including most of Europe, Latin America, and many other nations. Georgia authentication for non-Hague countries follows a longer legalization process that can include state-level authentication, U.S. Department of State certification, and embassy or consular legalization.

Georgia Apostille Requirements

The GSCCCA processes documents that fall into a few specific categories, each having special requirements:

  • Vital records. Birth and marriage certificates must be official certified copies issued by the Georgia Department of Public Health or the relevant county vital records office. Photocopies are not accepted.
  • Notarized documents. For apostille requests in Georgia, notarized documents must be properly completed before submission and include a correct notarial certificate, a valid commission date, the notary’s original signature, and an official seal from a commissioned Georgia notary public
  • Court and corporate documents. Official certified copies of Georgia court documents and Georgia business documents must be certified by the issuing Georgia state or county authority. Uncertified copies do not qualify.
  • Academic documents. To get your diploma or transcript apostilled, you need to have them notarized by an authorized school official before the state office will process them.

FBI Background Check Apostille Services in Georgia

Georgia residents preparing for international employment, immigration, residency, adoption, or a visa abroad sometimes discover late in the process that their FBI background check also needs an apostille. What you should remember is that an FBI Criminal History Report is a federal document. Thus, the GSCCCA has no authority to issue an apostille for it.

A federal apostille request for Georgia must be submitted to the U.S. Department of State’s Office of Authentications in Washington, D.C. One Source Process handles FBI apostille requests from Georgia end-to-end. What does it mean? We confirm the destination country’s requirements, prepare the documents correctly, route them to the appropriate federal authority, and manage return delivery.
